Tumblr is the richest way to share yourself online and watch others do the same. Really.
I don’t know if this is a result of the cool early-adopter community on tumblr or if these tools simply make this possible, but I’ve been having a blast with tumblr.
Looking in my dashboard, I can see people excited about being single, married, having relationships, releasing web products, finding great music, sharing their thoughts and unapologetic views of the world. That’s as rich as life.
All of this has been possible before in many places on the web, but tumblr connects the different dots and makes it fun to participate.
I’ve never consistently used a feed reader because I never liked what it does to the context and presentation of the post, but using the Dashboard (which is essentially a feed reader) has been fun since people I follow can see that I read what they write. Looking at a list of followers is similarly more interesting as these real people mean much more Google Analytics usage statistics
Then when I comment (reblog) on thoughts or images of others, those people immediately know. All without spam and other complexities.
It’s sort of what Flickr did for photo sites - instead of just having your photos stored and displayed in one place, Flickr does that plus let’s other people play with your photos and you play with them. Tumblr does the same for thoughts, photos, videos and more.
I wonder if this is a fleeting moment that will disappear as pressures to appeal to a wider audience will make Marco and David implement more and more features gradually taking away from the stylishness and minimalism that makes Tumblr great today.
Then again, people have written to me with the same questions about Hype Machine and each time we’ve pledged our commitment to the Fight Againt the Lowest Common Denominator, I am sure Marco and David will do the same. — fascinated
